Your Role in the Recovery Process

Mental health recovery is an ongoing process, not a single outcome. Each person’s recovery experience is unique. By making a personalized plan for managing a mental health condition, you have the best chance of living a life that is meaningful to you.

Just as the recovery process is ongoing, your participation in and commitment to your treatment should be ongoing too. Here are some things you can do to stay actively engaged:

  • Accept who you are. Believe in what you can do.
    Take responsibility for your actions.
  • Define your life goals and find ways to pursue them.
  • Participate in the decision-making process. It’s important that you take into account your own needs and desires as you make choices along the way.
  • Know that the mental health recovery process has its ups and downs—and you may have an occasional setback. But positive change can come from everything you learn, and you can keep going.
  • Find balance. Medication is an important part of your recovery process, but so are other elements like seeking support, pursuing goals, and finding activities that fulfill you.
